Nigerian senators are among the highest paid senators in the world. The Nigerian senate which is also referred to as the National Assembly (NASS) is the country’s highest legislature with power to make laws according to the 1999 Nigerian constitution.

There are 109 senators from the 36 states of the federation which is divided into 3 senatorial districts each electing one senator,however FCT Abuja can only elect one senator.

The senate is made up of the senate president who is the presiding officer of the senate,the senate president guide and regulate the proceedings in the Senate. There is also the Deputy President of the Senate.

The Senate President is third in the Nigerian presidential line of succession. Other positions in the senate include:-

• Minority Whip

• 63 Standing Committees chaired by Committee Chairmen.

Nigerian senators serve a term which last for four years,after which there will be a General election. A Nigerian senator must be re elected in the general election in other for him/her to remain in the chamber.
